Properties for daily journals

Hi! (for context: I'm creating my first space with Any, coming from the Capacities app)

Is it possible to add properties to the Journal mini-app daily notes? For example: wake up time, weight, etc.

In general I'm not sure how to create "Types" on Any with set properties, similar to "Object types" on Capacities, beyond the "Pages" type. Sorry if I'm a complete noob and this has an obvious answer.

Kaye Edit:

What's the problem?

  • User cannot add properties to Journal entries directly in the Mini app: Journal.
  • Each Journal entry is a Page Format, which is not intuitively understood by the user to be found in the Mini app: Formats

What's the solution?

  • Create a Journal Collection for all Journal entires made with the Journal mini app. This will make the journal entries immediately show up in the Collections mini app in its own defined section.
  • Give the user the ability to add their own properties directly in the Journal mini app.

I’m extending this point to the wiki and it’s also somewhat related to my comments about items that don’t need to be part of a collection.

I enable the wiki, perfect.
I add pages, great.
I want to check when I created the page (or who created it if it’s a shared space, etc.)… oh, I can’t.

You’d expect to be able to view the properties of any object.
Right now, you have to put them in a collection, even for properties that aren’t part of a collection (system properties).

So I support this feedback .
(If a separate section for displaying system properties is preferable, I can do that.)

Yes, the challenge we're having is about how to organise Formats with Collections on each Mini app. 100% recognise this issue. Thanks for the feedback.

When it comes to the Journal mini app, this is in prototype phase. At present, you are unable to define properties for each journal entry simply because it doesn't exist in the UI—they are Page Format and we need to clean up the relationship between Formats and Collections. I will edit your issue to better frame this as an issue for us.

In general, you can add a collection to any object, and then define whatever properties you want for that collection.

Thanks for the reply, Kaye!

That would cover the majority of my needs/objects, except for the Journal mini-app and use case.

As a workaround I tried creating a "daily journals" collection with a specific property. Then go through "Types" in the sidebar, then "Pages" to find the note for this day and add it to the "Daily journals" collection. The property then shows up there in the header but not in the Journal mini-app.

Am I correct to assume that entires on the Journal mini-app can't display/inherit properties inferred from a collection? Or can properties set specifically for the Journal mini-app be defined somewhere else?

For context, everything is very early days, so nothing is necessarily the way it is because it should be. With mini apps (like the Journal), it's mostly a matter of all of them being prototyped still.
The workaround that you've described is the way you can do it today if you use the journal mini app. But as you can see in how I've edited your issue, we should just give you the ability to add collections/properties directly in the Journal mini app. That way, you can do everything directly in the Journals mini app.

Makes total sense re: very early days.

Fwiw I think the journal mini-app is definitely a top candidate for collections/properties since I'd expect many people to track certain things (in a quantified self way) on a daily basis. This would effectively replace "habits" app in the same way having tasks centralized with notes in Any means there is no need to gave a separate tasks app.

Huge congrats on all the hard work!

Yep, we will figure out how to put the properties into the Journal mini app UI so that you can have a smoother experience with it.
