Wiki - Automatic ToC
Would be great, if the wiki could offer a consolidated table of contents of all pages (at all or just of (a) marked sections) to be inserted in a page.

·2 days agoThanks for suggesting this, Zak — a consolidated table of contents across wiki pages sounds like it'd make navigation easier.
To help us understand the use case better: are you looking for a ToC that pulls in all pages in your wiki, or just specific ones (like pages under a certain folder or with a particular tag)? And when you say "to be inserted in a page," do you mean you'd want to manually place it wherever you need it, or would it auto-update as pages change?
Basically in a Wiki the left collumn with all texts, ordered in Folders is already some sort of ToC, right?
However, it could be helpful, if you could this ToC inside a page.
Q: are you looking for a ToC that pulls in all pages in your wiki, or just
specific ones (like pages under a certain folder or with a particular tag)
A: Both should be possible. The use case would be, that you have some element referenced in a page, that shows them in the order of the navigation column. See the example below:
With my idea the little numbered list would generate and update automatically after I marked these elements as the source. Could be also the whole wiki.
Q: And when you say "to be inserted in a page," do you mean you'd want to manually place it wherever you need it, or would it auto-update as pages change?
A: Exactly. Like this I can use the wiki as a true source of assorted informationen.
This reminds me on Azure Devops wiki.
+1 from me
Why would you want this on the page when it already exists in the wiki menu? It seems redundant to have it twice. It also would seem confusing to me to have a ToC block that's usually always reserved for the object itself, to then having the same thing but it's not for the object at all.
You also have to imagine that this Wiki ToC block would display when you open the object from outside of the Wiki—that would lead to a lot of confusion.
As mentioned, it's much better to focus on explaining why you want something and what's the scenario. Describing a solution to us is not that helpful because we don't actually know what problem is being solved for.
I explained my idea further below. Does that help?
No. I think there's a misunderstanding of the system. Blocks are not objects. Only objects can be added to the wiki. The wiki is not a ToC of an object. As mentioned, it's best to actually describe what is the problem you're having rather than the solution you want.
