GUI Tab Needs

What's the context?

I submitted an improvement ticket asking for a few GUI Tab improvements. Once I started, there's a long list that I can think of for what might be helpful for folks use cases. However, I generally don't have many tabs open but would love to hear other's needs.

Why is this important?

Tab management is essential for navigating any application. There are some features that are

  • required features
  • occasional use features
  • nice to have features

For now, it be great if folks could put what their required features are.
For me its:

  • Right-click to close current tab, close all other tabs
  • Ability to rename a tab (current libraries, only say library without distinguishing what space they're in.)
  • Ability to pin a tab to the front.
  • Ability to hide all tabs for a focused view
  • An x icon on hover over a tab to close it.

What am I missing for others?

I might just need to be able to pin a tab and view the associated space. That's all I need, so I don't have many requirements when it comes to tabs.

In case that you don't know: you can close an open Tab with a middle-click (a click on the mouse wheel).
But I'm in general with you if you request a richer context menu on right-click, that offers more options that make sense in the given context.
-- AnyTwo should (on multiple places) make a little more out of the right-click context menus, IMHO.

Thanks for laying this out — it's helpful to see both the required features and the categorization (required vs. occasional vs. nice-to-have). A few clarifications would help us prioritize:

  1. When you mention "rename a tab" to distinguish libraries by their space — is the issue that multiple spaces have libraries with the same name, or that the tab label itself doesn't show the space context? (That shapes whether this is a display fix or a full rename feature.)
  2. For "hide all tabs for a focused view" — do you mean collapse the tab bar entirely, or hide it only when you don't need to switch between open items?
  3. Of the features you listed, which one blocks your workflow most often, or causes the most friction week-to-week?

Once we hear back on those, we can route this to the right team.

  1. Currently its that tabs lack the context of the space they are in. Below are two different spaces but the tabs display the same information. Having the space context would be useful for general navigating, but it wouldn't solve the naming friction for me. I'd still want to rename the tab.

For me specifically, I might name a task with detailed title like "Update the website's outreach section ministry contacts" but I really want specific abbreviated info, like "Outreach Web Update" for the tab's name.

2. I mean collapse the tab bar entirely. This is akin to a zen mode that browsers sometimes use. If I'm drafting a long article or copy editing something for someone else, being able to remove any distractions is helpful for me. I typically use the pomodoro timer method in instances like these.

3. I think the inability to rename tabs creates the most friction for me currently, especially with search being in development. Locating pages I've already opened quickly would greatly speed up my workflow.
