Chat Icon Position confusing

What's the scenario?

I think the chat is sort of difficult to view, that is true.
Maybe some little tweaks can help a lot already. Have a look at this example:

To me it is highly confusing, that the icon is at the bottom of the message and not next to the name at the top. It took me quite a while to understand, that it belongs to the start of the message.

What's the goal?

Put the icon next to the name of the messages' author.

Who is this for?

To all chat-users who want to understand with a quick glance, which message belongs to whom.

I agree that chat's UI is not optimal for viewing, however the problem is not icon positioning, rather it is multiple other aspects combined that attribute to this problem:

  1. There aren't proper avatar icons, so when two users have the same colour it becomes very confusing.
  2. The name of the user is not distinctive in colour between different users.
  3. Many of the chat components are split into their own bubbles: name, links, images, emoticons

This contributes to even simple messages between multiple users becoming difficult to parse. I would suggest that you take a look at other chat apps and you will notice it's not an icon position issue.

Just saw that my screenshot from my desktop is shown differently as it shows on my screen. I put on a second picture just to show the difference. There is no background color for the posts on my screen that is confusing.

I just realised that it is not the icon positioning but the background colouring. Each post should have different colour related to the background. That how Signal and Whatsapp do it, too.

Thanks for the detailed example — the screenshot makes it clear. To make sure we understand the exact change you're after: you're saying the chat icon should sit right next to the author's name at the top of each message (like [Icon] Author Name), rather than appearing at the bottom where it currently is?

And when you say "icon," do you mean the user's avatar/profile picture, or a different indicator?

Exactly, and I mean the avatar/profile picture. (At the moment just the first character of the users' name, 'Z' in my case.
